Banned by the political authorities in 1791, Méhul’s opera praises the magnanimity of the Roman emperor Hadrian, in whom, in 1799, Bonaparte was to recognise himself.
Presenting the typical ‘Revolutionary’ themes of heroism in war and delicacy in love, this work is as spectacular today as it ever was.
